The most significant issue we will
face in reviewing our past, working to become
our truth and/or access the depth and breadth of
our creativity
is
body memories. In understanding the
relationship between energy and consciousness, it is a rather
obvious conclusion our body will hold memories as does the
mind.
Most are familiar with
mental habits and memories. Some mental memories and habits are
the result of intentional conditioning and others are the result of
simply doing something a particular way repeatedly. Body habits and
muscle memories are similar and similarly developed but tend to be a
little bit more subtle. They are subtle in that we will not
necessarily have a conscious awareness of them when they surface for
we tend to remember them through feeling and what we feel in a given
situation.
Body memories tend to shift the feelings we have in a given
moment. Our
mind interprets what we feel as a result of what mind is aware
of happening. More often than not, mind tends to associate the
feelings the body has with what is happening externally. When mind
does this it never becomes aware of the body memories. That, in
turn, allows all that mind is thinking to become captured by the
past even when mind thinks it is free to create something new.
Freedom is a feeling.
True freedom is to be like the wind, coming with nothing (no
attachments) and leaving with nothing (no attachments). Unless
we are in that feeling of freedom when we are acting to create
something new, we will only be recreating the past in a new way.
This is why the
creative state of play of becoming like the spontaneous and
innocent
play of very young child freely discovering and exploring itself
and its world is so important.
Athletes, dancers, musicians, and the like are aware it may take
years of practice to learn to perform certain types and kinds of
body movements as an instinctive response. They train the body and
cause it to form itself to respond in a certain way by the focus of
their attention and awareness and the actions they take in response
to that focus. The muscles themselves may take a physical shape and
particular form to be able to do those movements. What needs to be
understood when the athletes, dancers, or musicians stop performing,
the ability within the muscles is not lost. They can be readily
regained with a little practice.
What needs to be understood about expressing
our truth
is that from the earliest age we are taught to live other than
our truth. It is the
nature of the experience to be a human being to be conditioned
to live other than our truth. We deny our truth for years and in
doing so our body developed muscles and memories which support
living other than our truth. Then, later in life as we work to
access and live our truth, or optimize our creative power we are
faced with the continual resurfacing of the habits of the past arise
through our muscle memories.
The
body memories which surface feelings of pain also frequently
calls forth the response patterns we may have developed to protect
ourselves from the pain. Collectively, these painful body memories
and their associated response patterns can appear to take on a life
of there own. What they do, many have referred to them as a “pain
body” that lies within our being.
In the same way it may take years to form the muscles memories to do
a certain athletic or dance task, it may take years to reprogram the
muscles of our bodies to respond different. In particular, it is to
train the body to respond to living
our truth rather than denying it. Additionally, these memories are
layered. We may open ourselves to feeling and do tremendous works to
address the pains and not so pleasant experiences of the past. Then,
when we finally feel free, another ghost from the past surfaces to
haunt us from a deeper layer within our being.
It needs to be remembered accessing the depth and breadth of
our creativity
is to return to the state of spontaneous and innocent
child like play
of discovery and exploration. The last time most of us experienced
such a state was as a child about the age of one or two before
mind enters the picture with it judgements, preferences, and
conditioning. Consequently, attempting to access our
unlimited creativity,
takes up back through all the ways we have learned to use our body
to deny
our truth rather than live our
truth.
Accessing and releasing our
unlimited creativity
is not something which can be done in a workshop, a counseling
session and the like. It will take time and an intense conscious
focus as strong a focus as used by any musician, dancer or athlete
not unlike learning an instrument, learning to dance or learning a
movement for an athletic event.
How long does it take? It depends. How long the journey can take
lies on a spectrum between two extremes - a fast way and a slow way.
The comparison between the fast way and the slow way is much like
the difference between making nuclear fuel in a reactor and
reprocessing the fuel versus using the much slower gaseous diffusion
process. But unlike making nuclear fuel, there is a gradation in
between the extremes.
Work done through the
mind and having the mind retain control will take years. It can
be done but it is a slow process for what we seek to change is not
of the mind. Most of the time will be spend educating the mind and
making it safe for mind to step aside and to
step out of mind.
If we are willing to step out of mind and let go to use the body,
the
body wisdom, how the body feels, and what is available to the
body, it can be done surprisingly quickly. How quick? As short as a
weekend under the correct established conditions but it does take a
little time to establish those correct conditions. However, one will
need to have a deep
passion and/or an understanding of what is found to hold onto
what is found until the
body memories are sufficiently strong to hold
our truth. Otherwise, the memories of the past will return and pull
us back towards where we started.
