The first reason to meditate is simply to allow the mind to
become silent. Silent in the sense of removing the constant
disturbances from the mind and rid ourselves of the performance
anxiety to become something other than we already are. It is our
nature to think thoughts. It is our nature to act on the thoughts we
have. However it is not necessary to flood the mind with thoughts to
create anxiety because it is impossible to act on all the thoughts
we have. Nor is necessary to flow the mind with thoughts that make
an anxious about life.
Removing the disturbances of mind is about learning to just be with
what is as it is. It is to be present to the thought we have in the
moment. Being present to the thoughts we have and watching them
often enough to silence the mind. It is as though when the thoughts
are watched and observed, they get the attention they desire. When
they get the attention they desire they no long need to flood the
mind for our attention.
When we become aware of the thoughts we have we can start choosing
the ones that we wish to have. That awareness shifts our focus to
produce more of the same and slowly weed out the ones that are
undesired. Our observation shifts of mind, and the way we observe
mind, shift our mind and what it is capable of producing.
In meditation we should not be performing or trying to perform. It
is about learning to just watch and be present to what is, as it is.
In this sense, any act of observing, an observation, is a
meditation.
In learning to watch, we learn to see when we are performing and
when we are acting true to our nature. Being present to is as it is
allows us to become mindful of what is in our mind. In learning to
watch when we are performing and when we are acting true to our
nature we open the door to exploring our true nature.
Meditation to become mindful and aware of one’s thoughts is probably
something everyone can achieve with practice. As with anything, it
takes practice. The more we practice the better we get. We just need
to remember that we do not need to make mediation an end in itself.
Once we learn to quite the mind, we can get on with our life to
create what we desire and a life worth living.
